For the month of October, we will be offering reflections on the rosary. For this first reflection, we will be looking at the typology of the Hail Mary. By comparing the first Eve, the mother of all the living, to the second Eve, Mary the mother of God, we can better understand this most important prayer.

Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you, blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb,

These words could apply to both Eve and Mary. Both were created full of grace and in the presence of God. Both are blessed women because both had blessed children.

Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God,

It is once Jesus is mentioned that the prayer diverges. Eve was blessed to be the mother of all the living, but Mary uniquely gave birth directly to God Himself.

pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

It is only once Eve falls that we become sinners and death enters the world. Mary as Co-Redemptrix helps to save us from sin and eternal death.
