And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. And God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, upon the earth.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, a third day. (Gen 1:9-13)
God covers the earth in countless gifts for us. Even singular tree includes many fruits for us, and the earth is covered in countless fruit trees and other plants which have gifts for us. While in this fallen state we struggle, we should not forget the original abundance that God gifted to us.
Yet if we took every single plant and lined them up, given enough time we could count them all. Even if we took every single atom in the universe, we could count them given enough time. For whatever is created is alays limited.
God however is not limited. His infinite being transcends beyond all creaturely limitation. Indeed, even an infinite number of things would not be like his infinity, for he infinitely transcends beyond all division. Indeed, each person of the Trinity is infinite, but it is an infinity so intense that three infinites remain one infinity.
When we see the countless gifts that God has created for us in this life, let us remember that they are but a drop of water in the infinite sea of being which is the divine essence. The beatific vision in heaven will both perfectly fulfill and infinitely transcend even the deepest desires of our hearts.
Let us pray.
O God, who on the third day created countless plants to nourish us in this life, grant, we beseech Thee, the grace to persevere to heaven so that Thou might nourish us infinitely more with your eternal being. Through our Lord Jesus Christ Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
