Advent meditation: On the third day of creation, God brought forth land from the water and created plants on the land. All the sacraments are foreshadowed through this. Land coming forth from water was a sign of baptism. Land and sea are frequently used in scripture as symbols of the faithful, marked out by baptism, and the gentiles respectively. Bread, wine, and oil are made from the fruits of the plants that were created. From the very beginning, God created the world for Christ and for the Church.
Prayer: O Lord Jesus Christ, help us to see how all things in the world were created by You, through You, and for You.
Scripture: And God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.” And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. And God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, upon the earth.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening and there was morning, a third day. (Genesis 1:9-13)
